DRESDEN, ONTARIO Aug 26, 27 and 28

As I write this report, have just returned from
sunny old England and my mind is a bit of a
Guinness and jetlag induced blur as to what took place
so many weekends ago... OK maybe not that MANY
weekends ago and my mind is usually blurry anyhow...

Do you know that those lads drive on the wrong side
of the road? On roads that are almost half the width of ours?
It's madcap crazy, and I will hear no arguments
otherwise...!

As I recall the Beaner, weather was as good as anyone
could ask for on both Friday and Saturday. Sunday featured
some 30 kph winds that added a certain dimension of challenge
for the Stunt contest. There was an upside to this as instead of flying stunt
(the chicken instinct in me was running strong) I instead got
to try out my new Powerkite that had been tucked away in
it's carry pouch patiently waiting for a day just like this. The Kite
proves to have some very powerful towing features and given a little
more wind, am quite sure that said device could probably tow me from
Centennial Hill to the Beaner quite handily, provided a steady westerly wind
and a determined take-off hop. Stunt Stu Poppins en route!

Despite the wind on Sunday, a heroic few insisted on flying
nonetheless and demonstrated a fearlessness
hitherto unseen around these parts. Particularly impressed
by one Tom Morgan who should certainly receive the
coveted and much ballyhooed, Balls of Steel
award as soon as we create it...!
Tom had just completed his first pattern a mere handful
of weekends ago and was very brave to even enter
this foolhardy endeavour in such nasty windyness, let alone
complete the dance. Congratulations brave grasshopper!

Backtracking to Saturday I recall helping with cut counting
around the combat circle. A young Yaroslav M. was rightfully penalized
on his first Combat round for leaving the circle without notifying his
opponent. Admirably, instead of taking it as an insurmountable hit
and going sour on the game, with nothing but a resigned smile
and just one life left, our hero dug down deep.
At the end of an exhausting day, fought many a battle, as the
balsa dust and foam slowly settled to the ground,
in a perfect made for "After School TV Special" moment
he found himself victorious, standing at the top
of the heap of broken skulls, crushed egos and tattered wings!

Almost brings a tear to your eye...  Ahem..!

Friday as memory briefly returns was also a quite good one
for one Mr. Peter Hanson, who almost rocked the house (taking 2nd)
in 80 MPH combat and also was at the business end
of a winning entry in the hotly contested LA Sport race.
Next year we will get Pete to pee in a cup, to ascertain
that the colossal speed variance observed in the final was not
due to steroid enhanced forearms used for
purposes of powerwhipping the plane as (if true) that
would be as Illeagle as a sick bird, ah sez!

Anyhow, attendance was similar to previous years and was a comfortable
contest to run and enjoy at Brad's fabulous private location in the
back woods. Not having to deal with the generally apathetic,
uncaring public (and their dogs) is a great luxury that is much
understated.  Hopefully if we are lucky, Brad will let us put the contest on
again next year at around the same time. Also comment-worthy is
the outstanding workmanship that Brad does on the grass
there. It is much comparable to the fairways of many a
tournament rated golf course. They could have taken a good lesson from
Brad at the last World Champs site in Gyula, Hungary.

It was also a great weekend for flying other types of planes, some
of the R/C variety, which really adds to the fun
aspect of this great venue. Thanks Brad for all your
efforts putting this contest together and bringing us such
model friendly weather!

Seeing as there where no entries in Profile Stunt at Niagara Falls it appears that
young Daniel has won the Beavers cup again this year!!!!

He has won it this year with at least 2 scores over 125 and will no longer qualify to win it
in the future though  :(   It is time for Dan to move to the world of X-Perts and leave such things
as Beavers Cup to the remaining Perts at large!
